In his brief life, journalist LeRoy Whitfield (1969- 2005) wrote about music, and film, but his dominant topic was HIV and AIDS, particularly how the virus and the disease affected the Black community. From his 1997 article, “Black Plague,“ to his final personal essay, “A Prayer for the Dying,” published two days after his October 9, 2005 death, Whitfield provided a unique voice, based on keen observations and rigorous analysis, informed by his personal experience of living with HIV and AIDS. Home at Last gathers the articles and essays of this important voice of his generation.
